Remembering Steve Jobs

Love him or hate him this one has done more to influence all of our everyday lives. I remember him entering my life in high school when my brother needed a computer for University and the best personal computer out there was the Mac. That was the first computer to enter my home. Sure I played with the PET computers, the Commodores, the Tandy's but there was never quite anything like the GUI of System 3.0 or Finder 5.01. SCSI, Hyperstack, ADB, and Trash. God I wish we still had the Oscar the Grouch Trash mod for the current OS.
I continued on my Apple ways myself through my college/University years. Purchased my first computer, the PowerPC 6100 during the Apple/IBM wars. Needless to say neither of those companies won the war because Microsoft came out of nowhere, being a Office software provider, to blitz both companies and win the PC wars.
Steve left Apple, founded NeXT, founded Pixar. NeXT eventually got absorbed into Apple when Apple needed to build a new OS. Guess what OS X is based on. :) And who hasn't heard of Pixar by now? THE 3D animation company that made those dead lifeless models come to life. Not because of the amazing animation tech involved but because of the story telling that involved both the parent and the child and whisked them into a wonderful world of imagination (except for Cars 2). Upon the return of Jobs to Apple what did he do? Bought NeXT. Killed off the dead projects. Introduced the candy flavoured iMac. Introduced the clamshell powerbook. Streamlined Apple. Made it relevant again....and that was just the start. He made peace with the enemy(Gates) and started his quest of world domination. His goal? To bring computers out of the hands of nerds and give it to the world. The gumdrop iMacs were fun. The clamshell powerbooks were fashion accessories. The children and women demographics. He gave them a taste and they would remember.

As those children got older he evolved the iMac into the lampshade model and the clamshell powerbooks became the black/ivory ones that were stylish and sexy. But that still wasn't touching the masses. What everyone was doing now was portable electronic media. The Sony Walkman was dead and people were jockeying to be the next Sony Walkman. Everyone was getting into mp3's! Rio was hot. Creative was busting out some juicy electronics. Everyone was throwing in everything into their mp3 players, the glitz! the glamour! the features! and the completely disaster that was their UI. So Apple comes along and says hmmm....we're jumping into this fray. Everyone else laughed. Hard drive for massive storage space. Firewire for fast transfer of files. Big screen for reading text. Click wheel for navigation. All the size of a box of cards. Cometh the iPod. The first step to world domination.

Sure we'll always have the pundits, then and now, that say, "well mine does this this and this and yours doesn't and you paid more!" Apple basically said, that's nice. We're going to make a music player and we're going to make it awesome! The first gen iPod was so successful, so mouth wateringly good that PC fanboys would drool with envy at the ease and simplicity of the design yet be so functional as well. Apple had to make a windows version of their iPod the next year because demand was so high it couldn't be ignored. So the guys that professed a love for DIY and tinkering also wanted a slick shiny sweet toy. Interesting. :) The iPod would go on to dominate the mp3 portable music market. Nothing anyone else made could touch it. Not even the mighty Microsoft. Apple didn't just rest on their laurels. They looked at the next market that would be important for the future. It had to be valuable, instant access and portable. Something incredible but wasn't accepted by the mass market. That would be the iPhone. No buttons, touchscreen interface. A glorified iPod with a built in phone they all said. Motorola was king. Startech with their clamshells. Nokia was a force to be reckoned with. RIM Blackberry users scoffed at the pretty pictures because they were the sophisticated business types. Well as they say, "look at me now" (a few years back). Practically the complete destruction of the dumb phone market. RIM in severe financial troubles. This was THE phone to have. It's not surprising that the major competition to iOS is from Google's Android phones. Google's head sitting on Apple's board of directors does give one some insight on what the potential competition is doing doesn't it?

Which brings us to Jobs last great product launch, the iPad. Sure there was attempts to create tablets before the iPad but really none of them sold well. Again following the same formula. Apple took an under performing market, something only tech geeks were interested in and but a humanizing flavour to it(iOS). Well suddenly there's a new market(again) created by or at least opened up to the masses and Apple but their sense of style and human element onto that product.

I'm sure that there are many other projects underway at Apple that have a touch of Steve in them but the thing to remember about this man, in my opinion, is that he may be revered/demonized for being a demanding boss but this man had a vision to give from the garden of the geek and make it accessible to humankind in a way that all could enjoy it.

Oh and one more thing. :) We all say we want to leave our mark on this world after we die, to be remembered for something. To put our mark in history. I think this man has achieved it.

It's been awhile but with everyone else blogging about Rememberance Day, (wear the red poppies people!), I decided I should post about something they fought to defend, my right to play awesome SSX games. Eat it Shaun White, you can't touch Elise! One of the greatest series I've ever played, continued playing and still playing even though the graphics look like crap on an HDTV. For years we railed against EA for not releasing a new SSX on the current gen consoles and no the Wii version doesn't count. Controls weren't fun there at all. Then there was an ad in one of their other games with a fake radio ad saying that SSX riders were heading up the mountain. Well that didn't pan out as no new game came out. Now we have multiple website urls being registered by supposedly EA with the name SSX Deadly Descent or some derivative. Am I stoked? Hell yes! It's time to hit some powder literally and digitally soon and that's going to be awesome!

So Saturday night, after work went out to watch Toy Story 3 and then figured that I could then go drinking, get wasted and hit on women who get more beautiful as the drinks go on. Yup. That was the plan.

Toy Story 3 was SO FREAKING HEART WARMINGLY BEAUTIFUL.

The story was awesome, the life lessons were wrenching, and Ken's Dream Mansion. My god, why the hell did Barbie ever leave him?! Even if he IS an accessory.

Go Canada! Go Heil! Go half Canadian Mogul winner!(You suck!) Nah just kidding. Kramer did a great job coming down that hill, so I can't fault her for winning but damn I wanted Heil to win. Oh wait, she did. She won Silver. A truly positive spin on a good outcome. She's truly Canadian, humble and positive but you know what it's not Canada's medal. It's your medal and we all bask it your accomplishment but it's not enough. Canada's medal will be when one of our athletes win's Gold on home turf. We wanted it to be you Jen but it didn't happen.

Neither did it in Short track speed skating. That's another sport I wouldn't watch regularly. Love boarding down the mountains, I like skating but if I ever say these events on tv would I pause to watch them? Not likely. But here in Olympic mania these events become awesome. Full day of events and I practically sat glued to the tv. Watching a Canadian and a 1/2 climb the women's Mogul podium was great but the greatest thrill? Short track speed skating men's final. Three Koreans, two Americans, a couple others and the Canadian. I don't care what the commentators were saying but it sure looked like the Koreans were racing as a team for the better part of the race, which is strictly forbodden, until the end. It was a commanding 1-2-3 placement until the last turn. One of them tried to cut in the inside and BAM! CONTACT! Two go down and the Americans(followed by the Canadian) suddenly get on the podium with the silver and bronze. Never saw that coming. It just became interesting.

Can't wait for Curling.

So go Olympic sports! Sports that no one cares about for every four years until you show! Raise the awareness of these sports and bask in the glory! For you have 16 days of action until your next 4 your hiatus.

Beer is the Reason: English is a fluid language.

So last night I was chilling with a bunch of friends over a few beers when we got to discussing long distance relationships. Blah blah blah....and somebody says, "that's so gay". Bam! One of us takes offense to that. She immediately wants him to clarify what he means by using that word in that manner. This leads to discussions of how the word isn't used to denigrate gay people but as a synonyms to mean lame. This lead to the argument that gay people would find that offensive but the counterpoint was gay people have been known to call things gay, in a derogatory way, themselves. Gay in old english originally meant nice, which has been appropriated to mean two male partners to now being known as lame, sorta. It's an interesting phenomenon. The discussion then went to how the word "nice" used to refer to ladies of the night to now mean ...nice. How "terrific" used to be Terror-fying or how "awesome" was slackjawed agape faces....etc etc etc. So is there any other current words that have originally meant one thing to have been appropriated to mean something else. I'm sure there's lots. Nigga' doesn't count, too easy. Nice try though.

Obviously I've got no scientific research to back any of this up, all of this heard from drunken people so could be complete and utter BS. Oh and it's marketing fault that there's a new dictionary every year. Business wise I understand why they would do that otherwise why/how could they stay in business? It's a dictionary!

I'm just awaiting works like Fuck-tards or Unfriend or other stupid internet words to make it into.....

For once someone is calling it like they see it. So instead of being all PC about children being fragile little things, the principal writes a joke letter and since a stupid or vindictive teacher sends it home and guess what a "helicopter" parent gets it and brings the crazy wroth of the PTA stay at home lazy ass parents on him. Let's put it in perspective, if your kid is stupid they should be in a general school. If your has a disability, say nut allergy or some disorder, then deal with it. Why should the rest of the class be held back because they need to be accommodated? Once they're out of school they're screwed. I'm eating my PB&J sandwich in their face if they sit beside me and I won't move. Go crying home to mama wussy boy.

This is why we need more Sue Sylvesters in real life.

Further, one of our students has a nervous tick that causes him to slap himself in face several times a minute. In order to help this child not feel conspicuous, we ask that your child imitate a crazed masochist for the length of this field trip."

Well it's been a few days since the coming of the iPad. Let's get it out right now. That is the stupidest name Apple has come out with for this product. Beyond that let's explore exactly what it isn't.

It's not a full fledged laptop. For Apple to undercut their own laptop lines would not make any business sense.

It's not the iPhone/iTouch though it share many of it's characteristics, except for the phone and camera portions.

It's a closed OS that restricts you from playing with it's internals, like the iPhone/iTouch. Expect that to be jailbroken once devs get ahold of it.

What is it then? The iPad is a closed electronic device, much like the PSP or the DS in that yes you can install/insert programs but only Manufacturer approved products. No one bemoans Sony/Nintendo that but complains when Apple does it. Apple is doing the exact same thing with the App store. Every piece of software that the above three mentioned companies approve for their device guarantees that it will work and you won't have to worry about compatibility issues. Like a phone, tv, car, you pick up the item turn it on and expect instant usability. Apple's iPad was made, in this ever complex world to simplify and distill your user experience to something enjoyable.

Sure we'll have the open source guys, the tech nerds, gadget geeks complaining and moaning how they can get a full feature laptop running XXX OS system for less. There is no arguement there what they say is true. I sure as heck would have added some USB ports and a camera to the device to give it more functionality. Truthfully this is a Apple's MO. They'll come out with a revision next year with these options. As a business they need to fund R&D somehow and they product that they have put out isn't that bad. On the other had if you want to hear some negative words ask me about the iPhone 3G vs 3GS.

What we are getting from Apple with the iPad is exactly what people have been asking for. Let's ignore all the techy people out there who can and will dive into a computers guts. What are the responses non-tech people give you when you ask them what exactly are they buying a computer for. The most common answers are, "Internet. Email. Office suite. Playing a little games on the side". Let's include some extras like music, photos, and watching videos/movies. So what does the iPad do? Internet. Check. Email. Check. Office suite(iWorks). Check. Games. Game Apps-check. Music. Check. Photos. Check. So far it does what the layman essentially wants,a stripped down computer that does all of the above without having to learn what DLL's are virus problem or worse. Tech-savvy people should be praising this device because what it's going to do is give you back your weekends. No more, "Hi it's Mom/Dad/GF/BF/Parrot/Ape. My PC doesn't work. Can you come fix it?" calls anymore. That should be a plus in and of itself.

So why are the armchair tech pundits on the bloggerspheres calling this a failure? Well it's because it's too simple and doesn't do what THEY want. This is the exact same argument they used when the iPods and iPhones came out. Not enough features. Too simple. Not complicated enough so that laymen couldn't use it so techs are the only recourse for people when they don't get how to use it. Well we all know how that ended and who's the undisputed champion of the personal music player. People like gadgets that just work. No fancy instructions, no pre-startup rituals. Just pick up and go.

It all boils down to keeping things simple and simple is exactly what people like my parents need.

By now, if you know me, I have hated flash with a vengence for years. Resource hog, stupid use for ridiculous menus, impossible to update without redesigning wholes sites, etc etc etc. Finally because of the iPad, awesomely STUPID name for Apple's new tablet, people are realizing this.

The main arguments against Flash running on the iPad are that it's a resource hog and a security risk. Both true! Hopefully the web is moving away from relying on Flash for videos and ugly menus, with HTML5 acting as a more-than-adequate replacement. But we're not there yet. To piggy back off this blog, now the City is strong arming the construction workers to absorb the cost of "giving" away a Metropass with every Condo bought.

I first heard about this issue on 680 News this morning when they were doing an interview with Ward 15(don't remember his name) councilor and Stephen Dupuis the head of building group. Every point that Dupuis put towards the councilor was met with stock answers and his inability to articulate why giving away free Metropasses was a good idea. Depending on the condo buyers lifestyle they either will just walk to work/school/wherever, will need to drive, or will use the TTC. The estimate given by Dupuis was, for example, 1/3 of all buyers would use the Metropass. Whathisname councilor was unable to give any hard studies on %, instead vacillating from anywhere from 75-90% buyers would use the Metropass, in the same sentence! One of his retorts was that if they buyer didn't want the Metropass it could easily be transferred to a family member. Bonus! WTF?!

That this bill was approved without debate infuriates me. Apparently there was a 3year discussion on this but I question that as well. More likely it was 3yrs of backburner talk and boom, passes before Christmas. More of Millers last minute hurrah of anti-car, pro-mass transit before he gets kicked off the mayorship? Do as much damage as possible before you leave eh?

The anti-car, pro-mass transit policy most cities push does not work in this city because this city's mass transit system is horrible and third tiered at best. Buses coming in packs, streetcars running late, subway system that is completely outdated etc etc etc. They say that the developers won't be allowed to offload the cost onto the buyer. I wonder just how creative the developers will be to rename the new tax as some kind of additional service they had to provide before selling the unit. Just wondering is all, not that I can blame them for having to subsidize something that might even be RETRO'd onto older developments.

I probably wouldn't be so against this if I thought that the TTC was a well run organization. I sincerely don't think it is. It's a system that with no viable mass transit competitor that has become fat, bloated, bogged down and complacent. European transit is superior and my recent trip to cities in China, the land of the "Commies", show that it's transit system in Beijing and Hong Kong will deliver at beat down on the TTC with both arms tied behind their backs and using only one leg! But hey the TTC Mob has the City in it's back pocket so whatever criticism's we level at it, they'll just laugh and keep going to the bank.

An example of the City being in the TTC's grip, William R. Allen Road/Dufferin stretch from Sheppard to Finch. They have managed to take away the HOV lanes, both north and south bound, to promote a Bus only lane while adding two stoplights less then 50 meters on both sides of Sheppards already existing stoplight so that buses can easily turn in lanes made especially for them. They've forced car-pooling people into single person lanes causing more congestion causing more delays causing more road rage and hatred towards the TTC.

Raging, foaming at mouth over the TTC and it's anal raping of the tax paying citizens of Toronto so I'll stop here.

So 25mins of exercise. Doesn't sound bad. I play 1hr of ice hockey, dodgeball, volleyball, etc etc etc. Granted ice hockey is the worse when it's one hour of continuous skating/so this shouldn't be so bad. I should know what I'm getting into. Need to get back into game shape anyways.

OMFG.

I lasted 12mins before I said fuck it. Day 1 starts tomorrow.

About 5mins warm up, easy. Tiring but easy. Which should tell you how long I haven't been exercising.

Beer is the reason: for even wanting to try Shaun T's BeachBody INSANITY. So I"m sitting on my fat ass at 2-3am in the morning watching tv, ABDC and/or Role Models, started abit of the latest Bring It On! when I decided to go for a water break and switched to tv for awhile. Well Shaun T's was pushing his latest workout tape called INSANITY! Something blah blah blah about Max Cardio workout and getting killer ripped in two months instead of one year. Sounds good. No weights, he extra gear, you just go go go for 60 days and you lose weight and see results! Sounds good right? Well going online to check out some reviews people who tried this workout say it's HARDER then P90X!! Good god, I'm too lazy to try P90X and I want to mess around with INSANITY?! I MUST BE INSANE!! Or it could be that I'm being enticed by the hip-hop roots of the workout, compared to P90X, and I want to get my rippling abs back even though I hate crunches(which they say they don't do).

Well got the week off so we'll see how well this goes......(I'm already cheating since I know I won't be doing the workout come mid-Oct since I'm flying out of town),,,,,,

Beer is the reason:..I haven't updated here in awhile. So for that I bring you two of the most hated things in our society. Pennies and towing companies. Pennies because they are such a pain in the ass to carry around. Small yet heavy, almost no appreciable monetary value by themselves yet we are required to use them because a) we're too cheap to round up and pay more then we need to (I know I am) and b)it's legal tender.

Towing companies. Freaking vultures that hang around waiting for the meter to expire and they tow you after 1 sec. OR if you call them for a tow, they charge you an arm and a leg to go probably $10 a block. Asses.

So it's nice to see those two hated items come together for some much needed comedy.

Oh and I'm busy playing UFC 2009 Undisputed on my PS-triple. :p

Long story short. Thief takes stuff from Chinatown store. Video taped evidence. Thief comes back to take more stuff. Staff confront thief. Thief runs. Staff detain thief. Police charge staff with kidnapping, assault, etc etc etc. Bail set at $7500 per person. May face jail time. Thief gets slap on the wrist and told not to do it again. No jail time charge. Name not released as the police claim he's the victim in this case. Bail at $1000.

I say the justice system is screwed since the thief is caught red handed but the police did nothing. I also say that thieves should have their hands cut off if caught just like in the olden days. Nothing says deterrent like a missing appendage. In this case I want the thiefs name and pictured plastered all over the media and I want all charges dropped from the legitimate business men who did what the police were unwilling to allocate resources to do. All crime should be treated equally, as small crime if ignored is a sign of the decay of civilization.

Okay a little back ground. Divorced parents. Kid lives with the dad, Mom okays field trip. Kid breaks Dads rule of internet usage. Punishes child by revoking permission to go on field trip. Child sues parent. Child wins suit on the argument that "the Trip was very important to her". Appeals court upholds decision but says to not use this case as an example for future cases. WTF! WTF! WTF! Y'know all those law shows on TV now? Law & Order being one of the biggest ones? How do they build their spotty cases? PRECEDENT! You stupid ass brainless shit heads on the BAR, you've just taken away a parents ability to discipline their own children, by non physical means, since you've already emasculated parents by practically outlawing spanked bottoms, now you take away the right to control their own homes?! Fuck this. If that was my kid and she did that, you know what the first thing I would say to the court, to the damn judge? "You just put another child into a FOSTER HOME". For many years winters have come and gone and I didn't really pick up on any of the sports....until this year. I watch ice hockey, I enjoy analyzing ice hockey but I don't play ice hockey. Maybe because of the fact I don't go ice skating often, averaging about once a year, but I signed up for ice hockey school in the summer and I now play in an adult(beer) league. I may be the crappiest skater out there since I can skate forward, turn and somewhat stop....which is limiting for someone playing D. The other teams probably hate it when I'm on the ice since I also play dirty (hooks, stick lifting) push them around under the pretense of going for the puck and I will level an opposing player if they're skating towards me with their heads down. Averaging about 2 hits a game and the refs can't call me since they're "clean" accidental hits. Suffice it to say I really like playing hockey and I should have started earlier.

The second winter sport actually I can't blame on anyone but myself. I did go snowboarding a few years back and I liked it. I even bought the helmet then because I was intending to take it up. Well I procrastinated and filled that void in by playing SSX, SSX Tricky, SSX3, snowboarding video games. A few years later and you know what I said to hell with it and bought a board and boots. After that I joined the group Torontosnow.com, a dedicated group of people who ski and snowboard and are looking to just have fun. No more excuses, time to hit the slopes and carve it up. I'm hyped and excited.

And I might meet some sno bunnies. :p

I was the first to call HRG morally gray on 9th Wonders....and lo and behold he was! I suggested that he was talking orders from above and was just possibly middle management ....and he was! And thus Season 1 was good. Then all the stupid fanboys/fangirls herd came onto 9thwonders and turned it into, oh my god he's so sexy/she's so dreamy! Ship! Ship! Ship! (Relation"ship" stories). The writers decided that they shouldn't listen to me but to bring Sylar back too early(cause he's popular) and it sucked. They listened to the shippers and Season 2 sucked even more. And thankfully the writers strike killed off that season early. Now Season 3 is here and it started off slow, since they had to somehow tie that crappy Season 2 into Season 3. Peter is dead! Claire did the deed! Matt is now becoming less boring and more interesting with his spiritual guide(a turtle! hahaha! Mohinder is Darth Vader! Gabriel takes up residence in the old Bennett household. Maya is hot but still can't act so her 5mins in the episode is welcome. Peter kills Nathan again! Hiro/Ando are finally developing characters! Wooo! Angela Petrelli is still a manipulative bitch. No HRG but Noah makes an appearance. Adam Munro utter, "Hiro, you son of a !!!!"

Beers to the fandom in September!!

Heroes Season 3 eps 1 and 2. Great fun and has more oomph then the entire Season 2 put together. For a show that was much maligned in Season 2(which I did not like either) it still pulled in a respectable number as compiled by Neilsen ratings, down slightly from Season 2's premier but that's to be expected since Season 2 was suffering the sophomore blues. Not surprisingly all the casual fans/band wagon jumpers didn't tune in to Season 3. Still it hit a million downloads via bittorrent hours after airing. Hmmmm....they must be doing SOMETHING right but let's wait and see what the momentum is come the next episode eh? Episode 3 is focusing on the Villains. I get this from a GOOD source(Jack Coleman). Psycho Fire power guy, Psycho Magnetism Guy, Psycho Mailman(Echo) sound guy, and Psycho Earthquake guy. All escapees from the Company's Level 5 holding cells. Things are going to go BOOM!

MELBOURNE: Scientists have discovered that going veggie could be bad for your brain-with those on a meat-free diet six times more likely to suffer brain shrinkage.

Vegans and vegetarians are the most likely to be deficient because the best sources of the vitamin are meat, particularly liver, milk and fish. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause anaemia and inflammation of the nervous system. Yeast extracts are one of the few vegetarian foods which provide good levels of the vitamin.

The link was discovered by Oxford University scientists who used memory tests, physical checks and brain scans to examine 107 people between the ages of 61 and 87.

When the volunteers were retested five years later the medics found those with the lowest levels of vitamin B12 were also the most likely to have brain shrinkage. It confirms earlier research showing a link between brain atrophy and low levels of B12.

Brain scans of more than 1,800 people found that people who downed 14 drinks or more a week had 1.6% more brain shrinkage than teetotallers. Women in their seventies were the most at risk.

Researchers found that the hippocampus-the part of the brain that stores memories - was 10% smaller in beer drinkers than those who stuck to wine.

Kids are back in school. Oil prices seem to have dropped slightly. I've got the final main parts for my home theatre set up. My birthday apparently is coming up. Oh and the crown jewel of what was once HD DVD's catalogue is now on BLURAY!

Yay that's right Transformers Directed by Michael Bay is NOW on Bluray. The video quality is light years beyond what DVD was able to store, and during a frame by frame analysis by xylon from AVS forums it seems that still picture quality is better then HD DVD. Watched quality you can't really tell the difference.

Now for the audio....the BASS is back! For the brief time I owned an HD DVD player I watched their version of this movie on my THX certified Logitech Z5450's (soon to be replaced by Polk Audio speakers). It was a showcase movie for the format back then but the audio sound was missing alot of the bass that was present in the movie. Where was the bassy boom during the EMP attack? The Autobot's coming to earth? The city fight? Well they're back baby! Feel that floor shake and glass vibrate! Mmm mmm goodness.

Next up and also on BLURAY is the legendary first fight between Jackie Chan and Jet Li. That's right, your chance to enter the Forbidden Kingdom is on September 9th. Yada yada yada. All you armchair directors that bitch and whine that they should've done this movie earlier in their careers. That the main story was bad (which it was). That they were selling out. You know what? Who the hell cares? It's Jet vs Jackie and they're still both freaking amazing. This was a visual feast for HK Kung Fu fans. Lots of humor, lots of references to famous old chinese movies, gorgeous scenery and a magical tale of boy meets Monkey King.

You can somewhat gloss out the obligatory white boy for Hollywood main character since he gets the shit beaten out of him by practically everyone. Gotta appeal to the lowest common denominator, the North American teen y'know, but the real meat, the main draw is still the fight in the temple between Jackie and Jet. Yay, when you're that old and the director is still telling you to slow down because your action sequence is still too fast to catch on camera you can criticize.

September 17 is awesome simply because it's September 17. 'Nuff said.

The hits just don't stop coming. On September 22, the three hour premier of Heroes Season 3 begins. The Villains are here! (and Peter may not be whiny....) I've seen the first hour and it is good. I'll blog about it on the 22nd.

And to end off the month comes one of my favorite comic book heros come to life. Iron Man on Bluray September 30th! Robert Downey Jr IS Iron Man.

Ah it's a good month to be a Bluray supporter. As for you HD DVD supporters I'm sure those tears go well with that beer. Tony Stark says so and he would know.

Beer is the Reason: Why I caved and bought Heroes Season 2 on Bluray

Celebratory beer drinking has to be the reason why the writing for Heroes Season 2 took such a huge dive into the deep end.

I'm a Heroes fan. Been one since San Diego Comic Con 2006 when I went to the panel to originally oogle Ali Larter(Varsity Blues) and Hayden Panettiere(Malcolm in the Middle). Came out as a fan of Greg Grunberg for his funny personality and respected Milo Ventimiglia for giving his "Grunberg is My Hero" shirt to a fan right off his back.

For those who haven't seen Heroes yet....what is wrong with you? Season One was one of the best shows ever! First ever obviously multi-racial cast since the original Star Trek, good acting, nice over arcing main theme and a nasty ass Villain named Sylar all culminating in an explosive finally in New York city. "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World". Huge following, huge hit, grass roots movement. Talk about Heroes, talk about Heroes talk about Heroes. Obviously I bought Heroes Season One on Bluray(thanks for making me wait Universal/Kenny G.).

Well all this success went to the writers heads and they obviously started imbibing the celebratory beer prior, during, and post writing the episodes because most of it did not have the cohesiveness or the charm of season one. In fact season two stories remind me of this commerical:

Now imagine the road means "awesome" and replace driving with writing and you have season two. Didn't go to SDCC 2007 so didn't attend the Heroes panel then but the buzz phrase for that one was "Don't talk about it". Gee prophetic anyone? Stories weren't terribly engaging, pacing is off, no over arcing plot, "SuperMan Whiny" is back. Tim Kring apologized for the season and HRG is still awesome HRG. At least they got that right. Despite all my complaints I still bought Heroes Season two on Bluray as well. Jack Coleman(HRG) ruled Season One in "Company Man" and they really developed his character in Season two when he went to visit his mentor in Europe. I'll raise a glass to the writers for that one.

Which brings us to Heroes Season three.

Yup went to the SDCC 2008 panel, ever hopeful for something good and boy did I feel rewarded. The magic I felt when watching the original SDCC 2006 pilot, which was never to be aired again but because of popular demand is now included in the DVD and Bluray S1 boxsets, is back. The shortened writers strike gave the producers the time they needed to get the writers into Alcoholics Anonymous long enough that they stopped drinking and started writing again. Pilot for S3 showed their results.

Prepare to get your socks rocked on September 22 for the 3hr premier of Heroes Season 3. Just be prepared for Season 4 to suck since the writers are obviously going to relapse into drinking after this season is over.

There is no way that in almost all the Gold medal fights that the Chinese fighters all won or were kicking their opponents ass. Watching the replay on NBC.

Case in point first match.

China vs. Mongolia.

round 1: Barely any fighting maybe one or two exchanges. Mongolia fighter doesn't even really throw a punch.

round 2: Mongolia fighter coach throws in the towel.

You can see the disgust in the Mongolian fighters body english. Official statement says he had an "injured shoulder", BS, was ordered by ring doctors to go to the local hospital but refused. Not suspicious at all.

Match 2: China vs Ireland

How in the hell did the Chinese fighter win? Bribery or something close to it. None of the clear blows that the Irish fighter was landing were being credited while obvious misses were being credited to the Chinese fighter.

Match 3: China vs Italy

Well....I guess the only way to win is to clearly and decisively dominate the opponent so that the judges can't cheat.

I can't watch anymore of this. I would have loved it if China won fair and square, and some of their boxers did come out to fight but to be determined by politics is bs. If this keeps out I would agree that Amateur boxing should be ejected from the games. This is disgraceful. Those judges must be bribed or so intoxicated with beer that they can't score right. That's it, it must be the beer.

Now this is what I'm talking about! Finally Team Canada medals and not with 2nd or 3rd but with Gold! Now look at that smile, look at that pride. Celebrate that medal because you just became the darling of Canada's Summer Olympic dreams of 2008.

And it didn't end there. After 1 week of medal drought, Canada, who sent 300+ athletes to Beijing, in two days of competition is bringing back at least 7 medals. Wrestling, a swimming pool medal(finally), and rowing. Lots of rowers. 8 men. 4 men. 2 women. 2 men.

Why are our rowers/paddlers so strong? One of the commentaries on CBC's website made by Kelsey sums it up nicely.

It can be argued that our National Team (men & women) have the WORST facilities of any national rowing program in the world - yet we still post these results. Why? Is it because the athletes currently in Beijing watched Derek, Darren, and Terry win Gold in '92 and thought "I can do that." Or maybe it was the story of Silken, or the raw desire-to-win of Marnie and Kathleen that gave them hope.

Perhaps it is because the these particular athletes do NOT believe that just making the Olympics is a goal in itself... they believe that if you're going to go, you might as well aim for the highest and rarest prize in sport.

Back from SDCC 2008 and San Francisco

So what can I say? Merchandise heavy, poorer, and fighting through panels. Exactly what I was expecting Comicon to be.

To start: Exhibition hall. BUSY.

Pros: Lots and lots of booths to go through. Distributors and sellers were out enforce to display their wares. It was great. Free swag everywhere!

Hot cosplay girls. :p

Cons:
This year they added a gaming section to the exhibit hall. As if it wasn't already crowded already with toy booths, comic booths, tv/movie promo booths the left side of the hall was dominated by the Street Fighter IV setup. I love SF and am looking forward to it but come on! Stupid booth took up a big chunk of the aisle.

Add in the fact Hasbro was doing a ticket lineup to get in the buy lineup was annoying as hell.

Stupid fat fans. Don't just stop and stare at something like a dumb deer. If you see something interesting move over to the side! Place is crowded enough as it is without your 300lb fat ass blocking the aisle.

Panels:

Pros: Pleasant surprise were the 24, BSG, Doll House and Avatar panel. Season 4 preview of 24 was so good I now want to watch the previous seasons to catch up. Damn you Comicon! BSG was funny with a large bunch of the cast there. Joss Whedon's Dollhouse was interesting. Avatar was nuts. Soooooo many Avatards. Chibi Momo was awesome. V should have been there. Also had a few panels I really wanted to go to such as the Venture Bros and Heroes.

Cons: Con organisers dropped the ball big time here. In 2006 there were so many interesting and varied panels that the problem people had were which panel to go to and which they would have to miss. This year the good panels were surrounded by SUCK panels so the lineup for the good panels were insane. Didn't get into the Venture Brothers panel since the lineup was huge. Heroes panel lineup started the PREVIOUS day at around 6pm for a 10:45am panel. So being a sucker I lined up at 4am the next morning to get in. As far as I'm concerned Season 3 Eps.1 is awesome. It's like the magic from the 2006 Heroes panel was back. Season 2 obviously sucked ass.

Swag:

Pros: Lots of swag to get. I got some. Royal and Ray got alot.
Super Pros: FREE SWAG. Lots and lots of free swag. Plus I got to see Tropic Thunder early! Awesome Awesome movie! Stiller is great, Black is great, Downey Jr is hilarious. Look for cameos. Alot of cameos. I didn't think that guy was Tom Cruise until he did that Tom Cruise-y type move at the end.

Beer Day 28: Paint an "L" on my forehead.

Beer is the reason: I showed up for work on my day off....the first day of my five day long weekend. D'oh!

So a bunch of things happened today.

1) I go to work as normal. Wake up at some ungodly hour in the morning(6ish) because of the heat. Call and wake up co-worker about 7:20ish. Drag ass out of bed by 7:30am. Shower and pick up her by 8am-ish. Drive up for work at 8:30am. Get to work and look at schedule....er....I'm off for five days?? D'oh!!! Get commended by managers(joking) for work ethic for coming in on my day off(grrrr....). Headed home around 9:30. At least I avoided rush hour traffic.

2) Go to doctors....and find out I popped one of my ribs on Monday. So THAT'S why there's intermittent pain. Prescription for anti-inflammatory and have to see him Sat. morning. Whatever. 3) Rogers kiosk at Dufferin Mall are idiots. Helpful idiots but still idiots. They aren't up to date with iPhone plan info from Rogers on website. Rogers store at Bloor and Jarvis is much better. Confirmed that I need a $30 voice plane to buy the iPhone. Corp plan 1175 covers that if I add in a few extras. I want data too so I'll pick up the $30/300Mb. Will line up friday.

4) Rogers news update: Awesome! Rogers has a limited promo of $30/6Gb until Aug. Definitely getting the iPhone now. Obviously with this plan instead of the 300Mb plan.

5) Played hockey. :p Lost the 2nd and 3rd period but we for the first period we played them well. It's only one game. We'll pick up the next one. I'm also playing Centre next. We're definitely going to win. (Think positive). :D

6) Bought alot of cold treats tonight. Nephews and niece are coming tomorrow.

Rogers iPhone plans still suck. Rogers CSR says that Corporate Plan 1175 is iPhone eligible with Data. Hmmm.....tempting. Rogers still sucks.

Beer is the reason: I got all 5 digitally remastered Dragonball Z boxsets.

Ah Dragonball Z. Watched it from video rentals in Chinatown. Awesome show. A new take on the Chinese Monkey King story except mixed with Superman. I was years ahead of the anime boom curve and years before DBZ became mainstream because of FUNimation or YTV.

It wasn't the best show, but it was a fun show.

Beer Day 23: iPhone getting hammered in the media

Beer is the reason: Rogers is so stupid as to not come out with new iPhone plans sooner.

It's not just the Canadian media bashing Rogers iPhone plans now. We started with ruinediphone.com and it just escalated. In Canada radio stations are constantly talking about it, news tv are devoting their tech segment to analysis of why Canadians are hate it(the iPhone plans. We love the iPhone though), Canadian based internet news sites are trying to be object but failing miserable. Then comes the INTERNATIONAL bashing. A Washington newspaper derided Rogers plans. An Australian newspaper mocked Rogers plans. The UK are making fun of how THEY aren't screwing their customer base unlike their Canadian GSM counterparts.

Wake UP Rogers. Like Twisted Sister said, "we're not going to take it!"

We'll go to Telus for the Samsung Instinct or the HTC Touch Diamond or Touch Pro for their SUPERIOR and CHEAPER data/voice plans or we'll go to Bell for the Samsung Instinct(launches slightly earlier then Telus) for their amazingly $15 Unlimited Data plan.

Unless of course Rogers does the two days before launch, "oh those weren't set in stone plans. Here are our new comparable to Bell or Telus plans" in which case the herd of Jesus Phone afficiondo's charge every Roger/Fido store and buy up the phones. I admit I would be one too but for now a big "F" "U" to current Canadian GSM companies.

Can't wait for Telus to announce they've got GSM towers like it was speculated they were building back in January. Unlike AT&T I don't remember Rogers getting exclusive rights to the iPhone. Come on Telus we're waiting for you!

Beer Day 22: Cujo is back with the Leafs

Beer is the reason: The Toronto Maple Leafs rehired Cujo as the back up goaltender.

I love Cujo when he played here, didn't like it when he jumped ship and am okay with him as backup as long as it doesn't interfere or create problems with the new no. 1 goalie Veska Toskala. Let's wait and see how this rebuild goes.
